Activism Series: Personal PAC

  • 5233 North Clark Street Chicago, IL, 60640 United States

Representatives from Personal PAC will be discussing the status of reproductive rights in Illinois and the way forward.

This event will feature Terry Cosgrove and Andi Friedman.

Terry Cosgrove is the President and CEO of Personal PAC.  He, along with the Board of Directors, has been instrumental in developing Personal PAC’s sophisticated strategy for electing pro-choice candidates. This strategy incorporates an intensive paid telephone program that has identified more than 3/4 million pro-choice voters across Illinois, plus a sophisticated direct mail campaign and comprehensive campaign consulting.

Terry’s campaign consulting is a real plus in implementing Personal PAC’s political strategy.  He works closely with numerous candidates to make sure they have the nuts-and-bolts tools to win on Election Day.  Among other things, he assists candidates in selecting pollsters, media consultants, direct mail firms, and paid campaign staffers. He also helps them recruit volunteers; execute fundraising plans and any other activities necessary to ensure their success. Over the past twenty-seven years, in addition to his Personal PAC responsibilities, Terry has also managed many political campaigns and has lent assistance to NARAL, Planned Parenthood, NOW, National Pro-Choice Resource Center, Voters for Choice, Women’s Campaign Fund and the Emergency Abortion Loan Fund. In 1992, Terry played a pivotal role in restoring abortion services for low-income women at Stroger Cook County Hospital, one of the largest public hospitals in the nation.  Terry was also honored with the ‘Freedom of Choice’ award by the Chicago Abortion Fund. In 2011, Governor Pat Quinn, with confirmation of the Illinois Senate, appointed Cosgrove as a commissioner to the Illinois Human Rights Commission. In 2014, Cosgrove was inducted into the Chicago LGBTQ Hall of Fame, in part for his 1980 role in filing the first successful lawsuit challenging discrimination based on sexual orientation in public accommodations. Terry holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, and Master’s degrees in both Labor and Industrial Relations and Social Policy.

Andi Friedman is Founder and President of AF Advocacy, a consulting firm that helps progressive organizations effectively advocate for policy change.  She is a lawyer and advocate with extensive ties in the women's rights and progressive communities.  Her current work is focused on advancing abortion rights in the U.S. Andi previously served as Director of Reproductive Health and Senior Policy Advisor for Reproductive Health at the National Partnership for Women & Families, where she successfully led her team to develop and implement a new vision for defending and expanding access to abortion and contraception. Prior to joining the Partnership she served as Foreign Policy Advisor to the late Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) where she covered international family planning and foreign aid, military and veterans affairs and trade. She has also worked internationally as a human rights lawyer as Vice President and Co-Founder of the Global Justice Center, leading trainings around the globe on women's rights and international law.  She began her career in women's rights as one of the first staff of the Women and Public Policy Program at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government where she promoted research and programming on women and policy and helped launch the Women Waging Peace Network. She has a JD from Harvard Law School and a BA summa cum laude from Tufts University.  She is currently a Board Member of Personal PAC and the Midwest Access Project and was a Fellow with the New Leaders Council.
